Baseball legends take part in 2014 Hall of Fame Classic
COOPERSTOWN, N.Y. (WKTV) - The excitement never ends in Cooperstown as just days after President Obama came to town, more royalty was at the home of Baseball, Saturday.
Some of baseball's all-time greatest players hit the diamond at Doubleday Field for the 2014 Baseball Hall of Fame Classic.
Among the participants were former New York Yankees great, and World Series MVP Hideki Matsui and former Red Sox pitcher, and Cy Young Award winner, Pedro Martinez.
They joined six hall of fame legends, such as Andre Dawson, Rollie Fingers, Eddie Murray, Roberto Alomar, Phil Niekro and 28 other former players for a 7-inning exhibition game in front of a packed house.
Seeing the legends made it a fun day for baseball fans, but it also made it a special day for the players themselves.
"There's just something special, and the feeling here is that everybody appreciates baseball," said Jim Thome, a member of the 600 Club, who was representing the Cleveland Indians. "There's different guys who have been all over the country and were born in different parts of the country, and we all kind of come together in this wonderful place, this little small town that so cool.
"It's just really, really neat."
"It's Cooperstown, It's baseball town. I've come here a few times and every time I get the chance to come up here, I'd love to come," said Ivan "Pudge" Rodriguez, who spent most of his career with the Texas Rangers. "That's the reason why I decided to come, and also to be able to see the guys again it's great."
"It gives me great joy to bring the guys back and to see some of my old teammates, and so many guys that I've played against," said Martinez, who is known for his role in the 2004 World Series winning Red Sox team that broke an 86-year curse. "I'm extremely proud to actually take part of this and be a part of it."
The game was one of many celebrations for the Hall this summer, with Induction Weekend set to take place in July, and the 75th anniversary coming up on June 12th.
