'Flash Mob' breaks out during Hall of Fame Weekend in Cooperstown

By WKTV News

COOPERSTOWN, N.Y. (WKTV) - Every July, the Baseball Hall of Fame Weekend brings in fans from all over the country and some from around the world. On this Saturday of induction weekend 2011, the fans on Main Street were treated to a surprise 'flash mob'. A 'flash mob' is a group of people who assemble suddenly in a public place, perform an unusual and sometimes seemingly pointless act for a brief time, then disperse,

About 50 Cooperstown area residents have been practicing a dance for the past two weeks and hit the street dancing around 11:45 Saturday morning. They danced to the famous John Fogerty baseball song called 'Put Me In Coach'.

The group was organized by Cooperstown resident Sue Pikarsky who always wanted to do something like this, "My daughter and I were sitting in the living room one night and saw a flash mob on TV, oh my gosh that would be so much fun to do, and I said where or when could we do it and I said we could do it Hall of Fame weekend, right down on Main Street."

A bit of a problem at first though, as Cooperstown Police Chief Diana Nicols tried to stop one of the members from entering the street, but then the chief allowed the so-called 'flash mob' to move forward. Nicols and other officers helped block traffic that had been going up and down Main Street to allow the three minute dancing routine to take place. Chief Nicols says Pikarsky needed to get a permit to do this, and was considering issuing her a citation. Pikarsky told News Channel Two said she will make sure she gets a permit, if she ever tries to do something similar in the future.

Cooperstown resident Emily Cadwalader watched the 'flash mob', "I don't know who came up up with this idea, but i think it's a great idea, we should do this every year."

Among the many baseball fans in Cooperstown this weekend are many from Minnesota and Canada. The two players being indicted are Roberto Alomar is going into the Hall as a Blue Jay, and Bert Blyleven is going in as a Twin.

Toronto resident Steve Martin drove the 330 miles to Cooperstown, "It's an exciting weekend, first time we've ever been down here, and I see a lot of support from Blue Jays fan base which is good to see."

Some, meanwhile drove the 1200 miles from the Minneapolis area. St. Peter, MN resident Chuck Zieman and his wife made a couple of other baseball stops along he way, "We left last Sunday and we had tickets for the Cubs game at Wrigley Field on Monday, went to that, drove on Tuesday to Pittsburgh, and had tickets to the Pirates game on Wednesday.
