UTICA, NY – The Utica College baseball team jumped out to a 4-0 first inning lead, but the Pioneers allowed six runs in the top of the fifth as the Hamilton College Continentals held on for a 11-7 win Tuesday afternoon in the 21st Annual Jackie Robinson Game hosted by Utica College. The Pioneers own a 12-9 all-time series advantage in the Jackie Robinson game dating back to 1987. Hamilton improved to 8-10 overall on the year, while UC dropped to 2-11 and they have now lost seven in a row.
The Pioneers jumped out to a commanding 4-0 first inning lead behind RBI singles from centerfielder Adam Keller (Rome/Rome Free Academy) and second baseman Chris Hine (Brick/Brick, NY). Freshman right hander Chris Pallas (Rome/Rome Catholic) was lights out through four innings until the Continentals bats heated up in the top of the fifth.
Hamilton scored six runs in the fifth to take a 6-4 lead and the Pioneers answered with two runs in the bottom half of the inning to knot the score at 6-6.
The Continentals posted three runs in the top of the sixth behind a Ryan Calabrese (Manlius/Fayetteville Manlius) RBI double down the left field line and a Justin Atwood (Wellesley, MA/Wellesley) RBI single which scored senior third baseman Dan Hood (Simsbury, CT/Simsbury).
Hood earned most valuable player honors for the Continentals after going 3-for-4 at the dish with a game-high three RBI and two runs scored. Hood’s two RBI double in the top of the fifth inning sparked Hamilton’s six run half inning.
Senior designated hitter Scott Tagliaferri (Rome/Rome Free Academy) was named MVP for UC after posting his second straight three hit game. He led off the first and fifth innings with singles for the Pioneers. Both lead-off hits guided the Pioneers to four runs in the first and two runs in the bottom of the fifth.
After the Pioneers threatened by scoring one run in the bottom of the seventh the Continentals added two insurance runs in the top of the eighth to close out the scoring on the day.
Jakob Saidman (Kingston, PA/Wyoming Seminary) earned his third victory of the season on the mound for the Continentals striking out three and allowing just two earned runs on the day. Calabrese finished the day going 2-for-4 from the dish with three RBI and two runs scored, while Atwood totaled three hits and two RBI for Hamilton.
Hine, a freshman second baseman, went 2-for-5 with two runs scored and one RBI for UC. Keller added one hit, one RBI and two runs scored, while freshman right hander Sean Fisher (Walton/Walton) allowed just one hit in one and two third innings of scoreless work to close out the game for the Pioneers.
UC returns to the diamond Wednesday when they take on visiting SUNYIT in non-conference action at the Utica College baseball field. The double header is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
Hamilton travels to Canton, NY Wednesday to take on host St. Lawrence University in non-conference play at 4 p.m.
