HCCC Men's Lax Advances, Rematch With Onondaga In Final

Sports WKTV

After a slow start, the top-seeded Herkimer County Community College men's lacrosse team pulled away from No. 4 Monroe in the NJCAA Region III semifinals on Saturday at Wehrum Stadium, winning 19-8 to advance to the final.

Monroe set the tone early, scoring in the game's first minute and taking a 3-1 lead. But the Generals responded with force, taking a 4-3 lead after the 1st quarter and outscoring Monroe 9-0 in the 2nd to take control.

Justin Hayes had a game-high eight points on one goal and seven assists, Kevin Kemp had two goals and four assists, and Jake Koch added four goals.

HCCC, now 15-1, will face three-time defending champion and No. 2 seed Onondaga, which knocked off No. 3 Hudson Valley 19-8, in the championship Sunday at 3:00. All three of Onondaga's titles have come against Herkimer and the Lazers had beaten the Generals five straight times overall until HCCC won this year's regular season meeting at Onondaga 24-19. The win snapped the Lazers' 42-game overall winning streak.
