UTICA, N.Y. – The SUNYIT men’s basketball team shot 50 percent from the field and nailed 15 three-pointers to pick up a 97-82 victory over the visiting SUNY New Paltz Hawks at the Campus Center Gymnasium Tuesday night. The win helped the Wildcats remain a perfect 3-0 on the season, while New Paltz fell to 2-2 on the year.
Junior David Golembiowski (Barneveld, NY/Holland Patent) opened the contest with a three-pointer and would add many more from there, making seven on the night and going 11-of-19 from the field to finish with a game-high 30 points. Golembiowski, who added seven boards, would lead an 11-0 SUNYIT run with three consecutive three pointers – combined with two free throws by senior Diloo Brown (Harlem, NY/Technical Careers Institute) – to help the Wildcats erase an early deficit and take a nine-point lead into halftime.
A 21-12 run by New Paltz to open the second half would put the Hawks right back in the contest, as they would trail by five, 65-60, with 11 minutes left to go. SUNYIT would respond with a 20-6 run, which included four three-point baskets, to go back up 85-66 and allow them to cruise to victory the rest of the way.
Brown went 10-of-13 from the free-throw line and made four three-pointers on the night to finish with 26 points in addition to a game-high 10 assists, seven rebounds and two steals. Senior Floyd Fitzpatrick Thorne (Brooklyn, NY/Paul Smith’s College), who ignited the crowd with a reverse dunk off an alleyoop from Brown in the second half, finished with 15 points, six assists and four rebounds. Senior Aaron Swancott (Boonville, NY/Adirondack) posted 11 points and seven rebounds, while junior Kevin Cappiello (Youngsville, NY/Sullivan West) had eight points, six assists, five rebounds and two steals.
Jayquan Anderson finished with 18 points to lead New Paltz, while Ryan Sawyer had 15 points and Shereef Taylore registered 14 points and game-highs of three blocks and three steals.
The Wildcats will be back in action on Monday, November 30, when they host local rival Hamilton College. Tip off is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
