CLINTON, N.Y. -- Stephanie Miguel '11 scored one goal and added two assists to lead Hamilton College to a 4-2 win against visiting Utica College in a non-conference women's ice hockey game at Russell Sage Rink on Jan. 26.
Miguel leads Hamilton with 12 assists and 18 points. Amy Allen '10 and Christie Sharlow '11 chipped in one goal and one assist apiece. Allen leads the team with seven goals. Becca Hazlett '13 made 25 saves, including 13 in the third period. She entered the night ranked fourth in NCAA Division III with a .943 save percentage.
Meagan Sudik '11 and Lynny Gonzales '11 scored the goals for Utica. Laurel Simer '11 stopped 32 shots, including 17 in the first period, in her second start this season in goal.
Allen gave the Continentals a 1-0 lead on a power-play goal with 6:14 left in the first period. Hamilton (6-7-3 overall) was 3-for-7 on the power play, and held the Pioneers scoreless in six chances.
Gonzales tied the score with her team-leading ninth goal as the teams skated 3-on-3 at 3:44 of the second period. Miguel put the Continentals back in front to stay with her sixth goal during a 4-on-4 situation with 4:19 remaining in the second. Meredith Bitterman '12 made the score 3-1 with a power-play goal 1 minute, 51 seconds later. The goal was Bitterman's first this season and second of her career. Utica (9-8-2) cut its deficit to one goal on Sudik's fifth this season with 24 seconds left in the period.
Sharlow closed the scoring with her third goal on yet another power-play chance for Hamilton with 4:44 remaining. Utica tried to rally late after the Continentals were whistled for two penalties. The first one was called with 3:29 left and the second came just 17 seconds after. The Pioneers pulled Simer nine seconds later and were skating 6-on-3 for one minute, but couldn't pull closer. One shot hit the crossbar and Hazlett made a couple nice saves to keep the two-goal lead intact. Utica also had an empty net for the final 1:25, but Hazlett was solid in goal.
The Pioneers still lead the all-time series, 7-5-2. Hamilton held a 36-27 shot advantage. The Continentals travel to SUNY Potsdam for another non-conference game on Tuesday, Feb. 2. Utica travels to nationally ranked Rochester Institute of Technology on Saturday, Jan. 30.
