HERKIMER, N.Y. (WKTV) - Charlie Anderson delivered a twenty-third straight Region III title for the HCCC men's soccer team in Sunday's dramatic 1-0 double overtime win over Genesee CC. Anderson scored the only goal of the game in the 112th minute, with just over three minutes to go in the second ten minute overtime.
The win, which is the twenty-fourth overall Region III title for the Generals, came at the same location as the upcoming NJCAA Divsion III Championships, November 8-11 at Wehrum Stadium. Herkimer will be attempting to win its ninth national title, after winning number eight last year.
Anderson, who was injured when the Generals lost 2-1 at Genesee earlier in the season, had several opportunities to score, including one in front of the net at the end of regulation. But he redeemed those misses with his game winner at the end of the second golden goal session.
"Genesee, got to give them credit, they worked hard the whole game. But we're going to move on now, hopefully we can win it," Anderson said after the game. "It's an amazing feeling, in front of our home fans, on our own pitch, there's no better way to win the regionals."
"the grey hairs keep coming in day by day, but what a way to win," HCCC head coach Pepe Aragon added. "Two great teams, shows you how strong our region is. They're number one in the nation, we're number two. That says a lot for our region... For the fans, what a great game to watch. No one likes to see 5, 6-0 blowouts. This was a lot of fun for the fans, not so much for the coaching staffs on both sides. But in the end it feels great."
Anderson, Pete McAvoy and Korab Syla were all named to the Region III All-Tournament team, with keeper Triston Henry the MVP. Henry had three saves in the title game Sunday.
HCCC, not only the two seed in the tournament, but also second to Genesee in the national rankings, improved to 17-2 on the season with their big, emotional victory.
