HERKIMER, N.Y. (WKTV) - The HCCC softball team is the #1 seed for the Region III playoffs and will host Columbia-Greene in the sub-regionals this weekend.  The Lady Generals come in with a record of 35-2 this season.

Herkimer made it to nationals last year, but only returned two sophomore this season, VVS grad Stephanie Siriano and Jessica Patterelli.

"The dedication from each individual on the team to the sport, the motivation we get from each other," says Patterelli, a graduate of Canastota.  "We have our motto, one team, one family, one goal.  That's exactly what we're trying to achieve."

The Generals began the season ranked #1 in the nation and say they have more depth this season.  They're hoping to not only get back to nationals, but this time win it.

"Just like anything, if you have a goal, that motivates you a little bit more," says head coach P.J. Anadio.  "That's been the key for us is these girls want to outdo last year's team."

Among the incoming freshman on this year's team is Notre Dame grad Delaney Buckley, who is happy to be able to play close to home.  "Going from hs softball to college softball's a lot different," says Buckley.  "The way we handle our business is a lot diffferent.  It's a lot more upbeat, there's a lot more focus.  You can't just go out there, have to be here every day and want to play.  Can't just go out there like just another day, just another game."

The sub-regional series with Columbia-Greene begins Saturday at 1, then continues with another one right after the first game.  If the two teams split, they'll meet Sunday at 1, with the winner advancing to the Region III Championships May 10 & 11 at TC3.
