HERKIMER, N.Y. (WKTV) - In a hard fought rematch against Genesee Community College in the Region III Division III 'A' Championship game, the Herkimer Generals prevailed 3-0 Saturday at Wehrum Stadium.
Herkimer (14-1, 4-0 MVC) had a slow start to the first half, but put a ton of pressure on the Cougars, amassing six shots-on-goal and five corners. It kept Genesee goalie Sean Allen busy, saving six shots, but more importantly, kept his team in the game.
Being held scoreless in the first half only happened once against the Generals this season. That game ended in a loss. Making sure the team didn't repeat that performance was sophomore midfielder Brian Coyt (Port Chester, NY). Coyt found the net (1-0) in the 52nd minute on an assist from Jimmy Calderon (New Rochelle, NY). It was Herkimer's first shot-on-goal in the second half, changing the trend from the first.
Five minute later, in the 58th minute, freshman forward MacIntyre Felton (Vestal, NY) gave the Generals a two goal lead (2-0) on the team's sixth total corner kick, first of the second half to continue the trends of firsts in the second half, this time from sophomore midfielder James Wilson (Woodford Green, England). It was Felton's sixth goal and Wilson's seventh assist this season.
Making an attempt to get on the board in the second half for Genesee was freshman midfielder Ben Polk. Shutting that effort down for the Generals, like he has all season, was sophomore goalie Triston Henry (Scarborough, Ont.). Henry saved one of his six total in the 71st to keep the two goal advantage. It also helped Henry to his 12th shutout this season.
Increasing the lead to three was Coyt, with his second goal of the game and third in the last four halves. It came in the 87th minute, assisted by teammate Adam Kozecke (Endwell, NY), his third assist this season.
The two goal performance earned Coyt Region III 'A' Tournament MVP. Added to that, Peter McAvoy (Dundee, Scotland), Mitchel White (Leicestershire, UK), and Henry earned themselves spots on the All-Tournament Team.
The team will learn about their seeding in the NJCAA National Tournament on Monday (11/4).
