By MIKE LEVIN

UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - For the first time ever, MVCC is hosting the NJCAA Division III Track and Field Championships, which began Thursday.

The Hawks have three national champions already crowned and are leading the overall women's standings after day one.

Two of MV's champions were in individual events, both in the Hammer Throw.  Justin Shaver took the men's title and Nichole Bliss, a Dolgeville native, won the women's crown.  Their 3200 Women's Relay team of Hannah West, Andrea Szewczyk (Ilion), Stephanie Boucher (New Hartford) and Amanda Perri (Frankfort) won as well.

A pair of individuals from rival Herkimer College also won titles Thursday.  Victoria Campanian captured the 3,000 meter Steeplechase, while Jack Minasi, a graduate of West Canada Valley, took the Triple Jump.  Minasi is a former state champion in the Long Jump.

The Championships continue Friday and Saturday at Proctor's D'Alessandro Stadium and Hamilton College.
