SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WKTV) - The Syracuse football team opened up training camp Saturday with their first media session, at Manley Field House. Head Coach Scott Shafer gave a press conference to talk about the team and afterward the gather press spoke with individual players, such as senior QB Terrel Hunt.
"You go into camp thinking of how can I make the team better rather than I have to compete, got to get myself better, " said Hunt who took over under center a few games into 2013. "So now you go in worrying about the team rather than being selfish in a way."
The Cuse has a number of experienced players on both sides of the ball going into their second season in the ACC, with a lot of depth in their ground game, including Prince-Tyson Gulley.
"We know we can compete in the this conference," said Gulley. "We have the skill level, the talent that everybody else has, we just need to come together and do what we need to do. So we're excited when it comes to that."
In setting goals for 2014, Syracuse is hoping to improve on last year's 6-6 regular season record and Texas Bowl victory. Their goal this year is to get eight wins.
"We play the same exact teams for the most part, except for five, we play Maryland again this year," said senior offensive tackle Sean Hickey. "I'd say 8 is a good level to reach, because you never want to go backwards, you want to go forward. I'm not going to say we're going to win 10 or 12, but I think 8 is a good number."
"When we went about setting our goals I said let's start with 8 wins, that's what our initial target is, but by no means is that a bar," added Shafer. "We want to go out there and win them all, get an ACC Championship, that's the ultimate goal in our program."
SU opens the season Friday night, August 29th at the Carrier Dome against Villanova.
