Sights and sounds from Colgate camp

By MIKE LEVIN

HAMILTON, N.Y. (WKTV) - There's nothing quite like football training camp season, just ask the Colgate Raiders, who opened camp Monday at Andy Kerr Stadium with perfect weather.  The running, stretching, conditioning and playmaking are all a part of getting ready for a new season out on the gridiron.

"We're great friends everybody, we make a big play on offense we let the defense know about it and vice versa, so it's great to be out here once again to start the season," said junior QB Gavin McCarney after practice.

Training camp is all about getting reps, no matter who you are, because as head coach Dick Biddle sais before the first practice, you never know who's going to make a splash during the season.

"Watch and see what the freshmen are going to do and react," Biddle said.  "That's the neat part about it, somewhere down the road somebody we're not counting on's going to step up and play and we're going to find out... No pads on, beautiful weather, everybody's here, it's great and we're undefeated, which is important."

The team is excited to be back, because the start of football season brings a lot more activity to the little town of Hamilton.

"Colgate football's pretty big here, so I think a lot of people are excited for this year to come," said McCarney.  "We come back here Week 3, the student body that comes out to support us is great, the parents, alumni, the environment is pretty great for that first game and you're glad to be back here in front of your hometown."

That Week 3 game is against Sacred Heart, September 15th at Andy Kerr Stadium.  But first, the Raiders open the season September 1st at UAlbany, followed by another road game on the 8th against South Dakota.
