UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - The Utica College field hockey team got back on track Saturday as it defeated Houghton College by an impressive 5-0 margin. Becki Vivacqua (Yorkville, NY/New York Mills Jr-Sr High) had two goals, and Hannah Mackey (Locke, NY/Moravia Central) had one goal and three assists to propel the Pioneers.
UC got on the board early as junior Alaina Stojkovski (Liverpool, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse) found the back of the net just 2:06 into the game. Mackey controlled the ball off a Utica corner and found Stojkosvki on the side of the net for her second of the year. The Pioneers scored again off a set piece at 21:08 as Mackey set up sophomore Colleen Dowling (Fairport, NY/Fairport) for her second tally of the year. UC caged its third goal of the half at 30:37 as junior Louise Steele-Norton (Avondale, PA/Millbrook School) brought the ball down the left side of the field. At the goal line, she sent a centering pass into Vivacqua who tipped the ball in just over the goal line for her second of the year.
Utica continued its momentum into the second half as Mackey connected with Vivacqua to put the Pioneers up 4-0 with 20:33 to play in the game. Just seven minutes later, Mackey corralled a loose ball from ten yards out, and lofted a high backhander over the head of Houghton keeper Emily Thompson and into the top of the net for her team-leading sixth goal of the season.
Kells Casey (Sandwich, MA/Kimball Union Academy) made two saves for the shutout win, while Thompson had nine saves in net for the Highlanders. Utica improves to 4-1 on the season, while Houghton drops to 1-4.
UC returns to action Wednesday as it travels to Geneseo for a match up against the Knights. Game time is scheduled for 4 p.m.
