BROCKPORT, N.Y. - The nationally ranked No. 10 Utica College men's hockey team tied host Brockport Saturday evening 2-2 in non-conference action. Three seniors led the way for the Pioneers as Jordan Hobaica (Clinton, NY/Northwood School) and Rob Morton (New Hartford, NY/Merrimack (Hockey East)) each scored and Nick Therrien (Rochester, NH/NY Apple Core (EJHL)) made 22 saves.
The Golden Eagles opened the scoring at 6:31 of the first period as Chase Nieuwendyk netted his third of the year, assisted by Bobby Chayka. Five minutes later, Morton put in the equalizer, on the power play to even the score. Ridge Garbutt (Toronto, Ontario/Brewster Academy (NH)) assisted on Morton's third of the year.
The Pioneers took the lead at 17:17 of the second period, as Hobaica broke free on the penalty kill and found the back of the net with an unassisted short-handed tally, for his fourth goal of the year. It was short lived; however, as Brockport tied the game just 1:17 later as Jake Taylor scored his sixth of the year, on the power play. Shane Cavelieri and Troy Polino assisted on the tally.
Despite each team having a power play in overtime, neither was able to score the winner as the game ended in a 2-2 tie after 65 minutes of action. Each team went 1-for-5 with the man advantage, Therrien stopped 22 shots, while his counterpart, Jared Lockhurst has 34 saves in the tie.
The Pioneers are now 10-3-3 on the year, while the Golden Eagles move to 4-8-3. UC returns to action next weekend for two games. UC travels to ECAC West opponents Nazareth Friday at 7 p.m. before returning home to face local rival, Hamilton College Saturday at 7 p.m. at the Utica Memorial Auditorium.
