UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - Whitestown is back in the Legion baseball state tournament, winning their first game 11-3 Wednesday over Oneonta at Murnane Field. The defending champions had a close game on their hands, within two runs, until the late innings when they scored two in the eighth and four in the ninth.
Brendan Heitz got Whitestown on the board early, hitting a three run home run in the top of the first. Oneonta came back to score two runs in the bottom of the third to get back within one run.
Whitestown responded with two more runs in the top of the foruth, the first on an RBI single by Dylvan Gorski scoring Dan Smith. The second came on a fielder's choice hit by Mike Bunal, scoring Connor Passalacqua.
After Matt Engler gave up a bases loaded walk in the sixth, Oneonta got back within one run, at 5-3. But then Whitestown had their late inning explosion.
Whitestown advances to meet Middletown, Thursday afternoon at 5.
