By UTICA COMETS

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WKTV) - An exciting night of hockey at the Blue Cross Arena in Rochester, N.Y. saw 5,421 Amerks fans head home disappointed, as the Utica Comets beat the Rochester Americans by a score of 3-2.

Patrick Mullen took home first star honors with a goal and an assist on the night for the Comets, while Pascal Pelletier scored the game-winning goal, with a goal at the 16:17 mark of the third period. Joacim Eriksson stopped 24 Amerks shots for the victory.

Johan Larsson netted two points (1-1-2) for the Amerks, while goaltender Nathan Lieuwen stopped 28 Comets shots in the defeat.

The Amerks got on the board first with a goal from Dan Catenacci just 5:11 into the first period. Standing all alone at the hashmarks in the slot, Catenacci beat Eriksson high glove side with a one-timer off the feed from Mike Zigomanis. Johan Larsson picked up the secondary assist.
Just a little over two minutes later the Amerks doubled their early lead with a power-play goal. Larsson skated the puck behind the Comets net, and found Chad Ruhwedel at the bottom of the circle, who beat Eriksson short-side with a one-timer of his own. Joel Armia picked up his second assist of the year.

The Comets got a goal back at the 14:47 mark on the first period on Alexandre Grenier’s fifth goal of the season. Off the Amerks-zone draw, Kellan Lain worked the back behind Lieuwan’s net. Darren Archibald won the race to the puck, spun and fired the puck to the slot, where Grenier was all alone and buried a one-timer past the Amerks netminder.

It took 9:11 in the second period, but the Comets tied the game in the second off a power-play goal from Patrick Mullen. With the power play set-up, Cal O’Reilly got the goal-scoring play started with a pass to Benn Ferriero at the top of the zone. Ferriero fed the puck to Mullen who was situated at the top of the circle to right of Lieuwen. From there Mullen would not miss, with the one-time slap-shot going in off the crossbar.

With 3:43 remaining in the period, the Comets would take their first and final lead of the night. Pelletier cleanly won the draw to the left of the Amerks netminder, back to Mullen. Mullen dumped it off to Tommernes who fired a shot on net, where Pelletier was waiting with the deflection that beat Lieuwen for the game-winning goal.

The win gave the Comets a three-game road winning streak, as they head back to the Utica Memorial Auditorium for another game vs the Rochester Americans tomorrow night.
