Herkimer Magicians fall in regional final

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WKTV) - The Waverly Wolverines topped Herkimer 26-13 in the high school football Class C Regional Final on Saturday.

Waverly took an early lead from a Zack Cooney three-yard touchdown run. That made it 7-0. Herkimer would respond on a 53-yard touchdown connection from Sean Crandall to Bryan McGuire. The game was tied at seven.

Still in the first quarter, after a Herkimer turnover, Cooney would score again from two yards out to make it 13-7 Wolverines.

Herkimer just could not mount an offense. Waverly would add one more before the end of the first quarter. Nick Puuklu ran in for a 59-yard touchdown to make it 19-7 still in the first quarter. That score would remain past halftime.

In the third quarter, Waverly would score again on a Herkimer miscue. Jeff Mastraton picked up a fumble by Herkimer and ran it in for the 10-yard touchdown. That put the game out of reach.

Herkimer would add one more score with just seconds left in the game on a Crandall two-yard plunge.

Herkimer finishes their season with a record of 9-1.
