Cooperstown Upsets Herkimer

By BRIAN SANDLER

HERKIMER, N.Y. (WKTV) - Whether or not its defense wins a championship this season is yet to be seen for Cooperstown.  But for one night, it definitely won a game.  The Redskins racked up five turnovers at Herkimer on Friday, including two returned for touchdowns, leading to an 18-0 win.

After a scoreless first quarter, Cooperstown struck in the second.  First, defensive back Luke Folts tipped a Herkimer pitch pass to himself and returned it six yards for a 6-0 lead.  On Herkimer's next possession, linebacker Chad Parshall grabbed another interception from quarterback Mike Fahy and returned it 35 yards for a score, making it 12-0 at halftime.

The trend would continue in the second half.  Early in the third quarter, a third interception snuffed out a Herkimer drive at the Cooperstown 45.  Late in the quarter, Herkimer drove to the Cooperstown two-yard line after an interception of its own by John Crandall, but on a sneak attempt, Fahy lost the ball going for the goal line and the Redskins' recovered it in the end zone.

In the fourth quarter, things went from bad to worse for Herkimer.  Plaqued by snap problems all night in their shotgun offense, the Magicians' center snapped the ball over Fahy's head when he wasn't looking, leading to a loss of 21 yards and putting Herkimer back at its own 35-yard line.  A few plays later another snap sailed over Fahy's outstretched hands--he was stretching for them throughout the game--this time leading to a 19-yard loss and another fumble recovery by Cooperstown at Herkimer's 16-yard line.

From there the Redskins drove into the end zone, nailing the coffin on their first league win of the season after going winless in league play last year.
