Whitesboro beats Ichabod Crane, Oneida falls to South Glens Falls

By By MIKE LEVIN

ALBANY, N.Y. (WKTV) - The Whitesboro Warriors are headed to the state final four for the first time ever after an 8-4 win over Ichabod Crane from Section II.  The Warriors rebounded from a few questionable calls that didn't go their way and still had a big inning to secure the win.

Ryan Watson's three run double in the 6th broke the game open after the Warriors trailed 4-3 coming into the inning. Mike Sullivan was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to tie the score at four and Bradon Heitz hit a blooper that dropped in for an RBI single to put Whitesboro on top to stay.

But the inning ended in an odd way, as Watson, with one out in the inning, was tagged out at home after Matt Engler reached on an error.  Engler was then called out for interference, which the umpires ruled was the third out.

The Warriors found themselves on the wrong side of another questionable call in the fifth when Engler hit a grounder to David Winch at second.  Winch threw to the plate where Derick Horn applied the tag to a sliding Mike Sullivan, who may have beat the throw with his slide.  That would have tied the game at four, but ultimately didn't factor in the final result.

Whitesboro now advances to face Pittsford-Sutherland at 1pm on Saturday in the state semifinals at Union Endicott High School. The winner plays for a state title at 4pm.

Also on Tuesday, the Oneida Lady Indians lost to South Glens Falls 5-0 in the softball regionals. They finish the season 19-5.
