Warriors take aim at states
CLINTON, N.Y. (WKTV) - The Clinton baseball team is gearing up for their first ever trip to the state final four Saturday. Thursday the team was forced inside and up the road, to Scott Field House at Hamilton College for some final drills and preparation for the semifinals, against Wheatley.
"I've watched them grow up, I've watched them mature, I'm happy for them," says head coach Tom Pfisterer. "Maybe this is once in a lifetime, maybe it'll be a long time before we get back here. I'm just really happy for them. They've worked hard, really worked hard and they deserve this.
It's been quite a season for the Warriors, who have some familiar names, like Mike Hayduk, who was a Sports Express All-Star and Athlete of the Week during basketball season.
"Coach knew from January, he said 'state final four and state finals is June 8th and what are we going to do to play on June 8th?' We believed in that one goal, especially us five seniors, it's our last go around," says Hayduk. "That's really important to us, we're playing on June 8th now."
The Warriors are on a roll, having won 18 of their last 19, and are hoping to win two more.
"Coming up through, I've always said I want to make the baseball team known, I want everybody to want to be on the baseball team when they're older," says senior Austin Bouse. "Little kids growing up, I want them to be able to say "i want to play for the Clinton Warriors baseball team one day, they won states in 2013.' That's what I want people to say and we're not going to stop 'till we get it."
The semifinal game against Wheatley is Saturday morning at ten from Union-Endicott High School, with the other Class B semi between Fredonia and Ogdensburg at one. The championship game is at four.
