COOPERSTOWN, N.Y. (WKTV) - Cooperstown Central School is about to retire the nickname Redskins on June 30 and the following day, they will be known as The Hawkeyes. The school board voted for the name change last week resulting in the official new name being "the CCS Hawkeyes." The reason the school must say CCS? The "Cooperstown" Hawkeyes already exist. The team plays at Doubleday Field as part of the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League. The owner of the team has already given permission to the school to use the nickname as long as they are called the CCS Hawkeyes and leave Cooperstown out of the name. The change-over begins on July 1.
