SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Hamilton girls basketball team beat Oriskany 53-49 in overtime of the Section III Class D Final at the Carrier Dome Thursday night. It's the third title for the Emerald Knights in the last five years, while denying the 2013 state finalist Redskins their third straight title.
Hamilton started on a 7-1 run, but their lead was cut to just 10-7 after one quarter. After taking a 25-22 halftime lead, they fell behind in the third, outscored 15-5 by Oriskany and trailing 37-30 heading to the fourth.
But Jess Welsh led a Hamilton coming, forcing an extra period, while scoring 12 of her 14 points in the fourth and OT. Welsh was named the Class D Sectional MVP.
Hamilton will face the Section IV champ in the regionals on Saturday, March 8th at Noon from SRC Arena at OCC.
In game two of the Thursday doubleheader at the Dome, Whitesboro fell 47-38 to Jamesville-Dewitt in the Class A Final. It's the second straight year the Warriors lost to the Red Rams in the section final and third straight title for J-D.
Junior Carly O'Hearn scored 15 points in the first half and 27 points in the game, hitting five three point field goals.
Maria Lapertosa led the Lady Warriors with 18 points. Whitesboro, seeded sixth in the bracket, finished at 11-10 on the season.
