SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WKTV) - The Herkimer football team fell short in their quest to win back to back section titles, as the Magicians fell 33-16 to Skaneateles in the Section III Class C championship Saturday. The Lakers scored two touchdowns in the game's first five minutes and although Herkimer got back within five near the end of the first half, Skaneateles controlled the game.
Conor Herr threw five touchdown passes, including four to Jake Cooney, who totalled eleven catches for 191 yards. The Lakers were shut out of the section final last year due to allegations of illegal recruiting, after beating Notre Dame in the semis. The Jugglers would face and fall to Herkimer in the 2011 C final instead.
Austin Mills scored the first of Herkimer's two touchdowns on a four yarder late in the second, which cut the Laker lead to 13-8. But before the half, Herr and Conney connected on their second score to make it 19-8 before the break.
With the lead already 33-8, Herkimer scored again in the fourth quarter, on a 25 yard TD from Mills to Adrian Viscomi.
The Magicians finish the season at 7-2, with their only other loss to Little Falls in the final week of the regular season, when they were missing a core group of suspended starters.
