UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - Smith Post came back from a big deficit to beat Utica 9-8 in ten innings at Murnane Field Thursday night. Smith came into the game a half game back in the Oneida County standings, so they move a half game in front, at 6-3, while Utica falls to 5-3.
The early innings of the game featured several big defensive plays, including Jeremy Seaton of Smith sliding to make a catch in foul territory, Utica's Mike Lackey throwing a laser in center field to catcher Mike Obernesser to tag out Jeff Cooke at home, Smith catcher Josh Mazzaferro grabbing a fouled third strike in the air and pitcher Brandon Bertrand nabbing a comebacker in the air.
Utica scored first in the bottom of the third, when Lackey hit a two run double scoring Dan Priore and Gary McConnell. Two batters later Ryan Alesando knocked in Lackey with an RBI single to make it 3-0.
In the fourth inning Utica added to their lead when McConnell drove in pitcher Tom DeBernardis and Priore on a single to make it a 5-0 lead.
Smith finally responded in the fifth inning, scoring five runs and chasing DeBernardis. They took a 6-5 lead in the seventh, but Justin Hall tied it with an RBI single to send the game to extras.
Each team added two runs in the ninth, and then in the tenth Smith scored the winning run on a passed ball. Cooke and Tim Abone each drove in a pair of runs to lead Smith.
