Warriors advance with rout of Carthage

WHITESBORO, N.Y. (WKTV) - The defending Section III Class A champion Whitesboro baseball team walloped Carthage 12-1 Thursday, in the 2011 section quarterfinals.  The #2 seeded Warriors will now host a semifinal game Saturday and if they win that game, it will mean a return to Alliance Bank Stadium in Syracuse for the championship.

The Warriors are hoping for a repeat of last year's success, when they went to the state final four, and maybe even more.  It's head coach Bill DeCoursey's final season at the helm and his players would love to send him off with a bang.

That's exactly what happened Thursday, as Whitesboro jumped out to an early lead, scoring four runs in each of the first two innings.

Matt Engler and Dave Abdou both hit two run doubles in the first, to get the Warriors on the board.  Adam Pexton and Mike Bunal then executed a double steal that caused a throw to go into left field, bringing home two more runs in the second.  Later in the inning Abdou hit another two run double into the right field corner.

Bunal was superb both at the plate, where he hit two solo home runs and scored in all three plate appearances, but also on the mound, where he went the distance, striking out eight and giving up just one run on three hits.

Although there was a threat of rain towards the end of the game, the first few innings were beautiful, with blue skies and temperatures in the high 80s.
