Whitestown stumbles at states

By MIKE LEVIN

UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - The Whitestown legion baseball team fell on day two of the state tournament at Murnane Field, 5-2 against Middletown.  Whitestown went scoreless through the first six innings and couldn't get enough offense going in the last three innings.

Pitcher Ryan Watson gave up two runs on wild pitches in the game's first three innings, then another in the first on a fielder's choice and one more in the sixth on an RBI single hit by Steve Iannolo.

Watson's defense came up huge, though, as Connor Passalacqua made a diving grab in right field on a shot by Jimmy Patterson to end the top of the third, then Mike Sullivan threw a laser in from center on a sacrifice fly by Mike Hughes, with Dylan Gorski applying the tag on Josh Walker to end the top of the fourth.

Then to start the fifth, Brendan Heitz made a spectacular diving catch in foul territory in left, hitting his elbow against the fence, but holding onto the ball for the out.

Whitestown will next face Braman in an elimination game, Friday at noon.
