Comenale named state player of year

Nick Comenale of New York Mills was named the New York State Boys Basketball Player of the Year in Class D Thursday.  The senior follows in the footsteps of another Marauder who won the award after a state championship year, Fred Russ in 2011.

In addition to joining the school's 1,000 point club this year, Comenale set new school records for three pointers made in a season, with 63, as well as in his career, with 127.

But most importantly he helped the Marauders win their second Class D state title under head coach Mike Adey, beating Coleman Catholic again, 57-50 in overtime this year in Glens Falls.  Comenale, who scored all 12 of his team's points in overtime, earned tournament MVP honors.

Five other local hoopsters were also named to all-state teams Thursday, with Comenale's teammate, Zach Vennaro, being named to the Class D fourth team and Poland's Mark Hennings on the second team.

In Class C, Zach Sawyer from state semifinalist Waterville was picked for the second team, while in Class B, Kevin Warmack of Notre Dame got fourth team honors.

Rounding out the group was J'von Evans of Proctor, who was named to the Class AA eighth team.
