King of Kings opens 2014 hoops season


UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - The annual summer basketball showcase in Utica is back, with the King of Kings opening its 2014 season Monday night at Utica College.  Former Syracuse guard Brandon Triche opened up by leading Motivated to a 75-69 win over Utica Select, scoring 20 points and dishing out eight assists.

Triche just returned from Italy, where he scored 43 points in his team's championship game.

Notre Dame grad and Colgate Raider Pat Moore added nine points for Motivated.  Lonnie Hayes led Utica Select, with 19 points, while Mark Lyons had 16 points and six assists.

In the first game of the day, Hoopsfiend Select topped Hard 2 Guard 88-76, with Nate Gause scoring 32 points and grabbing ten rebounds.  Josh Henderson added 22 points and eight rebounds.  Former Proctor Raider T'Andre Richardson led Hard 2 Guard with 15 points, while Lawrence Johnson added 13 points and nine assists.

The men's league continues Wednesday at UC, then moves to MVCC next week.  Among the players expected Wednesday are NY Mills grad Matt Welch and Mohawk grad Carson Murphy.  Holland Patent and SUNYIT grad Dave Golembiowski will eventually be playing as well, but hasn't returned from Germany yet, where he plays professionally.

The women's league begins Tuesday night at UC, then will be held at Notre Dame high school beginning next week.  The Thursday night College Prospect league begins a week from Thursday, at Notre Dame.
