VVS Dominates New Hartford

By by BRIAN SANDLER

VERONA, N.Y. (WKTV) - Despite the final score, the Vernon-Verona-Sherrill field hockey team dominated Tri-Valley League rival New Hartford on Monday, controlling possession for nearly all of the second half in a 3-2 win.

Trailing 2-1 at the end of the first half, V-V-S' Ashley Palmer scored with one second left to tie the game. New Hartford got a verbal lashing during halftime for allowing the goal, but whatever was said didn't work, as the Lady Red Devils took the lead just 13 seconds into the second half on Erica Strife's second goal of the game. From there, V-V-S kept the ball almost entirely on the Lady Spartans' side of the field, not allowing any shots on goal to hold on for the win.

For the game, which was a rematch of a 2-1 V-V-S win in last year's Section III, Class B semifinals, V-V-S out-shot New Hartford 18-4 and had a 12-1 advantage in penalty corners.

The Lady Red Devils took the first lead of the game just over 10 minutes in when Strife scored off a penalty corner. New Hartford tied the game with 16:20 remaining on a goal by Katie Cadieux and took the lead with 4:31 left on a score by Alexandra Kennedy.

V-V-S goalie Teresa Moats finished with two saves while New Hartford's Maureen McCoy made 15 stops.

The victory improves V-V-S to 1-0 in TVL play and 2-0-1 overall; New Hartford falls to 1-1 league and overall.
