SAUQUOIT, NY (WKTV) - Frustrated in the first half, V-V-S came through in the second of its Section III, Class B semifinal on Saturday at Sauquoit Valley, clipping Cortland 3-2 to advance to the championship.
After racking up 14 penalty corners to Cortland's one and six shots to the Lady Tigers' zero, V-V-S, the No. 2 seed, finally broke through with 21:21 remaining in the second half when Ashley Palmer made a great effort to free a shot for herself in front of the goal and buried it for a 1-0 lead.
Cortland came back with 10:18 remaining thanks to a long cross-goal shot by Alena Turturro, but V-V-S responded just 28 seconds later off another penalty corner when Erica Strife set a ball that Kathy Junglen fired through for what proved to be the game-winner.
For the game, V-V-S held a 16-4 advantage in penalty corners and a 13-1 advantage in shots. Cortland goalie Maggie Brown recorded 11 saves, including several of the above-average variety that kept the Lady Tigers alive throughout the contest.
V-V-S, now 15-3-1, advances to face top-seeded Camden, 16-2 after beating No. 4 New Hartford 4-1, in the Section III, Class B final Sunday at Chittenango at 6:00. The matchup is a rematch of last year's final in which the teams shared the title with a 0-0 tie and Camden advanced to the state playoffs with a 3-1 edge in penalty strokes. The teams split their two regular-season meetings this year.
