Field Hockey:Mills sticks Sauquoit in rematch
N.Y. MILLS, N.Y. (WKTV) - The Sauquoit Valley and NY Mills field hockey teams put on another impressive show Tuesday, with the Lady Marauders pulling out a 2-1 victory on Pink Day, celebrating Breast Cancer Awareness. Earlier this year Mills beat the Lady Indians 2-0 at the stadium in Sauquoit. Erica Pendrak and Carly Dziekan scored the two NY Mills goals late in the second half.
Sauquoit goalie Jessica Jecko stopped nine shots, and held Mills scoreless for nearly 49 minutes before letting up a goal. Mallory Mazurowski scored the first and only goal of the first half, giving the Lady Indians a 1-0 lead at the break.
The Lady Marauders had several chances to score but every time they unleashed a shot, Jecko was there to knock it away, until Pendrak's chance came with 11:02 remaining. Sarah Frankland set up the NEWSChannel 2 Basketball All-Star for her chance and Pendrak delivered with a pretty shot from the left side of the net that tied the game.
With less than two mintues to go in the game, Mills was knocking on the door again and Dziekan, set up by Kayla Brittell, made a perfect shot out the of reach of the outstretched leg of Jecko.
Both teams supported the cause of finding a cure for breast cancer, with Sauquoit's players wearing pink socks. Mills players wore varying amounts of the color (including Savannah Dietz who dyed her hair entirely pink), with head coach Andrea Dziekan decked out in all pink. The grounds crew at Mills even painted on pink ribbons in each of the field's four corners. The official game ball was also pink.
With the win, the Marauders improved to 10-3 on the season, while Sauquoit fell to 6-6.
