New Hartford Holds Off Camden

By By BRIAN SANDLER

UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV)- New Hartford football made Proctor's D'Alessandro Stadium home sweet home on Friday night, opening the season with a hard-fought 41-31 win over Camden.

The Spartans, which are playing their home games at several sites this season due to a turf field being installed at New Hartford, had lost to Camden in each of the past two seasons, but running back Joe Carcone made sure the skid would not reach three by rushing for 205 yards and three touchdowns on 20 carries.  John Boyle added two scores, one receiving and one rushing.

Leading 20-17 at halftime, Carcone scored on an 80-yard run on New Hartford's first possession and ran in another score on its next for a 34-17 lead.  Camden cut it to 34-31 going into the fourth quarter, but the Spartans were able to hang on.

The win was not all good news for New Hartford, though.  Quarterback Mike Doyle took a helmet hit to one of his knees during the second half and was taken to a hospital.  There's no word yet on the extent of the injury.
