VERONA, N.Y. (WKTV) - After letting a 14-0 lead disappear in the fourth quarter, Vernon-Verona-Sherrill got a 3-yard touchdown run from Matt Sliker with 4:17 left to escape with a 21-14 victory over Homer in its Section III playoff opener on Saturday.

V-V-S, the No. 4 seed, 7-1 overall and ranked No. 19 in the state Class B poll, will face top-seeded, undefeated and No. 5-ranked Westhill in the semifinals at a site, date and time to be announced Sunday.

With both teams struggling to move the ball in rainy, extremely muddy conditions, the Red Devils struck first in the second quarter by turning a blocked punt into great field position at the Homer 28-yard line and capitalizing with a 2-yard touchdown run by Colin Way for a 7-0 halftime lead.

V-V-S doubled its lead in the third quarter on a 37-yard touchdown pass from Tyler Mautner to Sliker, then Homer tied the game with a 1-yard Logan Hall touchdown run in the third and an 18-yard TD pass from John Sciera to Demitrius Nelson in the fourth.

Homer is 4-4.
