Westmoreland claims third Section III football crown

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WKTV) - Head Coach Tim Gates and his state ranked number one  Westmoreland Bulldogs captured their third Section III football championship Friday. The Bulldogs beat Weedsport 43-20 at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse for a Class D title.

Early on the Bulldogs had some jitters, fumbling on their first play of the game. Quarterback Dan Smith lost control of the ball, giving possesion to Weedsport. The heavy underdog Warriors made the most of it cashing in on a Brian Quigley 11 yard touchdown run.

The Bulldogs would quickly respond mid way through the first quarter on an 11 yard Justin Becker touchdown run to tie the game at seven.

Becker would then add another 11 yard run I the second quarter, breaking through the Weedsport defense, to give the Bulldogs a 14-7 lead. Becker finished the game with 85 yards rushing, and three touchdowns on the ground.

Westmoreland would score 29 first half points, through the arm of Smith and the legs of Becker.

The Bulldogs added two touchdowns in the second half, the final of which was an onside kick return for a touchdown, that by Becker.

Westmoreland improves to 10-0 and will play next friday at 5 p.m., at Union Endicott, against the winner of the Delhi, Groton game who play each other Saturday.
