ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WKTV) - The Whitesboro Warriors lost to Sweet Home 36-13 in the Class A State Semifinal in Rochester on Friday night. Nick Mauro had two touchdown catches from Sean Jones in the loss.
Whitesboro started the game off with an impressive drive but Jones was picked off by DJ Nettles. On the ensuing drive, Patrick McMahon connected with Jahaan Williams for a touchdown to give the Panthers a 7-0 lead.
The lead would not last for Sweet Home though. After a fumbled punt return, the Warriors recovered and scored a few plays later on a 24 yard screen pass from Jones to Mauro to tie the game at seven.
The second quarter though is where Sweet Home turned things up a notch. With Whitesboro backed up inside their own 10 yard line, Jones is sacked in the endzone by Mikel Coleman for a safety. That made it a 9-7 Sweet Home lead.
The Panthers would then score two rushing touchdowns in the quarter, one from Ralph Neasman and one from Jordan Johnson to take a 22-7 halftime lead.
Whitesboro would try to make a game of it. After a DJ Nettles three yard score, the Warriors got a 67 yard touchdown from Mauro on another screen pass from Jones early in the 4th quarter cutting the lead to 29-13. After an onsides kick recovered by Whitesboro, Jones was intercepted by Williams who took it all the way back for a score. That sealed the deal for Sweet Home.
The Warriors finish their season 10-2 overall. Sweet Home will face Burnt HIlls in the Class A State Final on Saturday at 6pm at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse.
