WESTMORELAND, N.Y. (WKTV) - The Dolgeville football team earned a measure of revenge on Westmoreland Saturday, beating the Bulldogs 20-18. The Blue Devils not only dropped their regular season finale at home in 2011 to Westmo, but also the Section III Class D Final at the Carrier Dome.
Neither team scored in the first quarter, so Tyler Deveans's one yard TD run for Westmo in the second gave his team a 6-0 lead. Deveans, a freshman, was starting in place of the injured Zach Green, whose right wrist was in a cast. He is expected back in Week 5.
Reid Johnson scored a pair of touchdowns late in the half, the second coming after an interception, giving Dolgeville a 13-6 lead at halftime.
Austin LaVeck then gave the Blue Devils a 20-6 lead with a five yard TD run in the third quarter. Westmo finally got back on the board before the end of the quarter, thanks to a tough 32 yard run by Tim Harrison.
Harrison, who finished with 126 yards, scored again in the fourth quarter, on a 14 yarder to pull the Dawgs within two. But Dolgeville stopped Westmo on a two point conversion attempt, then recovered an onside kick attempt as well.
With time running down, it looked certain that the Blue Devils would win, until Devin Tophoven recovered a fumble by Jason Nastovski. Westmoreland's offense stalled, until Deveans connected with Devin Williams for a first down deep in Dolgeville territory.
Then on the next play, Westmo's chance to win evaporated, after Robert Heitzman couldn't get his hands on an option pitch and the Blue Devils recovered.
Dolgeville stays perfect at 4-0 on the season and will host Sauquoit in Week 5 Saturday. Westmoreland hosts winless South Lewis that same day.
