UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - The Dolgeville Blue Devils held off a late rally by Beaver River to win 19-18 Saturday in the Section III Class D quarterfinals. Dolgeville scored 19 points in the first quarter, then went scoreless the rest of the way and had to rely on its defense to win.
The Blue Devils got going in the first quarter when Jake Darling scored on a six yard TD run. Kaleb Smith then gave Dolgeville a bigger lead, scoring on a four yard TD run. Jared Frederick gave the Blue Devils a Td run trifecta in the quarter, getting into the end zone on a four yarder.
The Beavers slowly inched their way back into the game, getting a six yard TD pass from Evan Lyndaker to Trevor Lehman, and making it a 19-6 game at halftime.
Beaver River pulled within a touchdown early in the fourth quarter, on a 24 yard TD run by Lyndaker.
The victory looked well in hand for Dolgeville after an interception by Ray Ruggerio with less than five minutes left, but the Beavers got the ball back and marched all the way back, getting within one on a 13 yard TD pass from Cody Houppert to Isaiah Riccio.
But instead of going for a tying extra point, Beaver River went with a two point conversion attempt for the win. The Blue Devils contained the run play to preserve their victory.
The Blue Devils advance to the semifinals, where they'll face Weedsport in the semis, a rematch of last year's Class D quartefinals, won by Weedsport.
