SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Westmoreland Bulldogs beat Dolgeville 20-7 in the Section III Class D championship Friday at the Carrier Dome. It's the fourth section title in the last six years for Westmo, whose last two titles have come in Class D, the last one in 2009. Before that the Bulldogs won the C title in 2006 and 2008.
The matchup with Dolgeville was a rematch of the regular season finale, in which Westmo won 33-0 at Dolgeville. Both teams came into that game with 6-0 records, so the Class D East title was on the line. The Bulldogs took a 14-0 lead at halftime, then rolled in the fourth quarter.
In Friday's section final, both teams struggled to score in the first quarter, but Westmo exploded for three touchdowns in the second. The first was on a one yard run by QB Zach Green, the second on a 35 yard run by Tyler Barnes and the third a 61 yard TD pass from Green to Marvin Sherman just before halftime.
Ray Ruggerio scored the only Blue Devils touchdown, a 7 yarder in the third quarter.
With the win, Westmoreland now advances to the Class D regionals, next Saturday at three from Binghamton.
