CLINTON, N.Y. (WKTV) - In a game that featured more fouls than made field goals, the Mohawk girls basketball team earned its first trip to the Section III finals since 2002 with a 49-43 win over Beaver River in the Class C-2 semifinals Saturday at Clinton.

With top-seeded Mohawk leading 36-29 after three quarters, No. 5 Beaver River opened the fourth with a 7-1 run to make it 37-36.  Mohawk was unable to pull away and only led 43-41 with 1:27 left, but the Lady Mohicans made six of eight free throws in the final minute to ice the game.

The victory sends Mohawk, now 21-1 and ranked No. 11 in the state in Class C, to the C-2 championship game against the winner of No. 2 Bishop Grimes-No. 3 Waterville Wednesday at RFA at 6:00.

Mohawk started the game slowly, trailing 11-7 after the first quarter.  The Lady Mohicans rebounded in the second, holding the Lady Beavers to just one field goal and taking a 20-15 lead into halftime.  Beaver River regained the lead 22-21 early in the third quarter, but Mohawk responded with a 10-1 run to go up for good at 31-23.

Christy Traglia led Mohawk with 25 points, including nine in the fourth quarter on 9-of-13 free throw shooting--which almost didn't happen as she nearly fouled out late in the fourth but had the call go against Beaver River.  Brittany Harvey grabbed 10 rebounds.

Beaver River, which finishes the season 14-7, was led by Payge Lehman's 14 points and Tasha Roes' 10 points.

Beaver River committed 24 fouls in the game and only made 16 field goals while Mohawk committed 17 fouls and made only 14 field goals.  The Lady Mohicans shot 18-for-32 on free throws for the game.
