Section III basketball finals moving back to Syracuse

By WKTV Sports

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WKTV) - Section III Executive Director John Rathbun announced Wednesday that the
2012 boys and girls basketball finals will played in the Carrier Dome. Wrestling and indoor track will be staged in Onondaga Community College¹s new SRC Arena.

The basketball finals have been played at the Utica Memorial Auditorium for the last two seasons. Section III had one more year left on their contract and asked to be let out of it. The Aud accomodated the request.

According to Section III, there are 108 schools that participate in Section III. Attendance for the boys basketball finals in Utica last year was down more than 50 percent compared to the last year at Manley Field House.  About 9,800 people attended the hoop finals at Manley in 2009 compared to 4,300 at the Utica Auditorium this year.

"For our kids to have the experience to come to this facility (the Dome) and the new SRC Arena, it¹s going to be an activity and event that they¹ll soon not forget." Rathbun said.

The Aud will still host the Section III hockey finals and the State Hockey finals next season.
