Warriors to face Spartans in section final

By MIKE LEVIN

WKTV - The Section III Class A girls basketball championship will be decided Sunday afternoon at the Utica Memorial Auditorium, as top seeded and undefeated Whitesboro faces New Harford.  The Warriors, who've beat the Spartans twice already this year, will be hoping to forget the last time they played their chief rival in the playoffs.  Last year in the Quarterfinals New Hartford upset Whitesboro.

"It's always a good game with New Hartford, seeing as it's at the Aud it'll be even better," said Warriors senior Francesca Cotrupe.  "I can't wait, I know I'm ready, I know my team is and I know New Hartford will bring it, too."

The Warriors have another reason to play hard, as sophomore Jen Deuel said: "Whitesboro has the best fans ever and it's our coach's birthday, Mr. Reader's birthday is March 6th.  We're going to play for him and play for the team and hope it comes out good."

If the Spartans can pull off the upset, it will be head coach Mike Callan's 200th career win.  "I've always told them you win with defense," says Callan.  "Our defensive pressure and the way we play defense over the last 10, 11 games has been very very good. I think whitesboro scored the most against us, 47 points in the last 10 games. We are doing well defensively which is what wins sectionals."

Tip-off Sunday at the Aud is tentatively scheduled for 3:45 p.m.
