UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - The RFA Black Knights played two and three quarters periods of great hockey, but in the final three minutes penalties killed them and led to West Genny winning 2-1 taking home their third straight Section III Division I title.
After a scoreless first period, RFA would draw first blood on a Seth McCormick goal on an assist from Kyle Williams. West Genny put a ton of pressure on Anthony D'Urso in that period. The Knights were outshot 11-2 in the period but it stayed 1-0 after two.
Just when it looked like RFA might pull out the win, they were called for two penalties. With 3:08 to go in the third, West Genny with the two man advantage, Shawn Lynch scored on a loose puck in front to tie the game at one.
Exactly a minute later, the Wildcats still a man up, John Sabert let a wrister fly that just got by D'Urso to give West Genny the 2-1 lead.
RFA had one last chance with 42 seconds left, it looked as if TJ Reilley had scored the game tying goal to force overtime but the officals waived it off stating the goalie had covered it before Reilley could score it. A very controversial call that had the fans fired up.
RFA finishes a great season at 18-2-2.
