Lady Spartans clinch first ever playoff berth

NEW HARTFORD, N.Y. (WKTV) - The hard work of the New Hartford girls lacrosse team finally paid off Friday, as the Lady Spartans clinched their first ever playoff berth, with a 13-8 victory over Fulton.  Any team who earns seven wins automatically qualifies for the sectionals.

But for these talented ladies, just getting in won't be enough.  In fact, they have six more regular season games, five on the road, and are hoping to improve their record and their skills a lot more before the postseason begins.

In Friday's game, which was held at Myles Elementary because of the annual New Hartford Invitational Track and Field Meet at Don Edick Field, senior Emily Miller led the Lady Spartans with five goals.

"It feels awesome. No other feeling could top this, it's great to know for the first time in New Hartford girls lacrosse history we're going to sectionals and we're the team to do it," Miller said excitedly after her team reached its playoff goal.  She, along with co-captains Jesse Rys and Marykate Edmunds, have grown up with the Spartan lacrosse program, from the team's infancy to now.

Eighth grader Annika Zalewski also chipped in three goals and an assist for the 7-2 Lady Spartans, and was just as pumped after the win.  "it means a lot to me, it's a great point to reach, this was our goal for the season, but we have a lot more work to do, this win meant a lot."

Carol Faber and Theano Alvanos each added two goals apiece, while Ashley Chanatry had New Hartford's final goal of the game.  Fulton was led by Erica Knaub, who had three goals and two assists, and Emily Rothrock, who had two goals and an assist.

New Hartford will play at Jamesville-Dewitt Saturday at 3:45, followed by a Tuesday game at Mexico.  Their final home game of the season is May 18th against Homer at Don Edick Field.
