Women's Hockey:UC edges Hamilton on road
CLINTON, N.Y. (WKTV) - Junior Megan Myers (Las Vegas, NV/LA Selects) netted her 50th career goal Tuesday night to lead the Utica College women's hockey team over local rival Hamilton College, 5-4.
The Pioneers improve to 11-7-2 overall including an 8-4-2 mark in the ECAC Women's West and return to conference play Saturday as they head to Buffalo State for a weekend set. The Continentals drop to 11-8-1 on the season and are back on the ice Friday when they head to Brunswick, ME to face Bowdoin.
The home team got on the board first just 1:24 into the contest on an even-strength score from Jill Tokarczyk to take an early 1-0 lead. UC answered on an even-strength score of its own just under three minutes later, at 4:07, as Kelsey Dowdall (Smiths Falls, ONT/Nepean) netted her fourth goal of the season set-up from Louise Steele-Norton (Avondale, PA/Millbrook School) and Nicole Schwartz (Danville, CA/San Jose Sharks) to knot the game up at 1-1.
Utica would take its first lead of the night, at 16:29 in the second period, as leading scorer Megan Myers (Las Vegas, NV/LA Selects) rifled her 12th season and 50th career goal, unassisted, to give UC a 2-1 edge. The Continentals retaliated with back-to-back goals, just .29 apart, at 18:19 and 18:48, to recapture the lead and take a 3-2 lead into the final period.
UC came out of the locker room and netted back-to-back goals, at 5:38 and 9:29, to regain a slight, one-score advantage, 4-3, as Nicole Schwartz (Danville, CA/San Jose Sharks) rattled off her fifth and sixth scores of the season. The home team would answer once again tying the contest, 4-4, with just fewer than four minutes to play. The Pioneers would not back down however as Carmen Johnson (Falls Church, VA/Washington Pride) converted the game-winner at 16:52 to get UC back on track headed into its final five-game strut.
Utica goalie Jennifer Hamel (Ithaca, NY/Northwood School) stopped 23 shots while Continental keeper Becca Hazlett recorded 20 saves on the night.
