Sauquoit tops Poland in primetime showdown

SAUQUOIT, N.Y. (WKTV) - It was a matchup years in the making, two powerhouse girls soccer schools going at it, with Sauquouit Valley topping Poland 2-1 on their home turf Monday night.  The Lady Tornadoes were playing their first game since winning the Class D state title last fall.

It was the third game off the season for the Lady Indians, who are now 2-1 this year after falling in the Class C state semis in 2012.

After a scoreless first half, Jenna Mazza scored two goals for Sauquoit in the second.  Shiane Irwin scored late for Poland, while keeper Courtney Green stopped 12 shots.

The two soccer powerhouses will meet again in Poland at 4:30 p.m. Sept. 26.
