V-V-S softball capitalizes on New Hartford errors for win
By BRIAN SANDLER
WASHINGTON MILLS, N.Y. (WKTV) - Seven errors, a lack of clutch hitting and a dominating performance by the opposing starting pitcher spelled doom for New Hartford softball on Monday as visiting Vernon-Verona-Sherrill got a big 4-3 Tri Valley League victory.
With New Hartford leading 2-0 after two innings, the Lady Spartans committed two double-errors in the third to allow the Lady Red Devils to tie the game. A sacrifice fly in the fourth and a solo home run by Mary Schilling in the sixth made it 4-2, and after New Hartford scored in the bottom of the inning to make it a one-run game, V-V-S starting pitcher Stephanie Siriano stranded the tying run in both the sixth and seventh to seal the win.
Siriano finished with 13 strikeouts, allowing three runs (all earned) on seven hits and four walks. Stephanie Romanow also went the distance for New Hartford, allowing four runs (two earned) on four hits and one walk and striking out seven.
The victory improves V-V-S to 4-6 overall and 1-1 in TVL play while the loss drops New Hartford to 5-4 (1-1).
