NEWPORT, N.Y. (WKTV) - In a game that saw both starting pitchers strike out 18 batters and both defenses make more mistakes than they would have liked, Poland softball stayed undefeated Wednesday with a 10-5 win at West Canada Valley.
Poland's Erin Batson not only racked up the strikeouts--including four in one inning due to two reaching base--she also went 3-for-5 with two home runs and three runs scored. West Canada Valley's Alexa Dispirito matched her in strikeouts, but five errors behind her were too much for the Lady Indians to overcome.
Poland, ranked No. 8 in the state in Class D, improves to 10-0 overall while West Canada Valley falls to 3-12.
The Lady Tornados jumped out quickly with three runs in the first inning, but the Lady Indians came right back with four in the bottom of the frame. Poland re-took the lead in the fourth with a four-spot itself and never looked back.
