CICERO, N.Y. (WTKV) - After beating Poland in the Section III, Class D-1 championship for the second straight year on Wednesday, the Oriskany softball team lost to Stockbridge Valley in the D-1/D-2 final for the second straight year on Saturday, falling 9-1 at Cicero's Gillette Road complex.
With the teams meeting for the third straight year in the D-1/D-2 final, starting pitchers Mallory Ingalls of Oriskany and Cheyenne Bumpus of Stockbridge Valley traded zeros for the first four innings. Stockbridge Valley, the D-2 champion, finally broke the ice in the top of the fifth with an RBI single, then D-1 champion Oriskany came right back in the bottom of the inning with an RBI double by Megan Serley. Stockbridge Valley re-took the lead in the next inning with a two-out RBI single and broke the game open with a seven-run seventh, taking advantage of a couple Oriskany errors to put the game away.
Stockbridge Valley, now 21-4 and ranked No. 10 in the state in Class D, advances to the state tournament beginning next week in Binghamton. Oriskany, ranked No. 21 this week, ends the season 18-4.
