New Hartford tops VVS in pitcher's duel

NEW HARTFORD, N.Y. (WKTV) - A beautiful day for softball Tuesday featured two spectacular pitching performances, with New Hartford and starter Bianca Pavia getting the better of VVS and Steph Siriano, 2-1.  Both pitched complete games, with Pavia striking out nine, giving up just one run on five hits.  Siriano gave up two runs on five hits, while striking out twelve.

The Spartans struck first in the first, when Sam North slid under a tag at home after a ground ball out by Krista Pristera  Neither team scored for five more innings.

In the bottom of the sixth New Hartford picked up an insurance run, when Alyssa Acquaviva scored on a throwing error.  The play began when a third strike to Danielle Witchley hit the dirt.  Witchley beat the throw to first, but Acquaviva, who began the play on first, kept running to third, and her gamble paid off.

VVS looked like they were finally starting to figure out Pavia in the 7th, getting a run by Ashley Palmer, who led off the inning with a double.  But Pavia struck out Sam Kegebein to end the game.

The Spartans improve to 1-2 with the win, their first home game in Washington Mills this season.  It was VVS' opening game of the season.
