Cooperstown still undefeated

COOPERSTOWN, N.Y. (WKTV) - On a rainy Wednesday afternoon, the Cooperstown softball team talked about still being undefeated and what's ahead for them.  The Lady Redskins, 13-0 this season, have never won a league title, let alone a section crown.  That, they hope, will change by the end of the month.

"We go into every game like it's the biggest game of the season," says pitcher Nicole Cring.  "We go in like we have that target on our back, because we want to win, we want to go really far this year and win our first banner."

Cring has been a force on the Redskins mound this year, winning 12 of her team's 13 games and striking out 146 batters.  She amazingly threw a no-hitter, followed by a perfect game in back to back starts.

The senior, who also was a big part of Cooperstown's girls basketball section title this winter, is hitting over .400 with four home runs.  Teammate Maggie Hall is also hitting over .400, while blasting a team high six homers.

On Wednesday, as the Lady Redskins warmed up for a scheduled game with Westmoreland, which ended up being called because of the rain, the junior SS spoke of what it's been like to grow up in "The Birthplace of Baseball."

"I've been playing tee ball here since I was four or five, so it's been a big part of my life and I used to play baseball before I started softball," Hall says.  "It's been a huge part of my life, my mom works at the Hall of Fame, so everything has been very baseball, softball oriented."

Cooperstown has been close to a section title, like last year, when they fell 2-1 to Weedsport in 11 innings of the C-2 semis.  They're hoping this is the season they finally get over the hump.

"The girls have really pulled together this year," says head coach Dave Bliss.  "Everybody hits bumps in the road, always a blip that could casue a team to pull apart or pull together and the girls have really pulled together.  They understand their roles and taken their roles to heart, that's what you need to have success, the girls need to work as a team."
